With very rare exceptions among libertarian bloggers like Michael Rivero, Xymphora (and here) and Moon of Alabama, when it comes to the Iran elections, everyone else, even Justin Raimondo from Antiwar.com, is on the same level: Ahmadinejad´s victory was a “blatant fraud”.
When the issue of Iran is at play, logic and objectivity goes down the drains.
Let´s look at one undisputed fact: the elections had an unusually high voter turnout (84%). Western media and bloggers tell us, this would have favored Mousavi.
What kind of logic is that?
In all elections everywhere in the world the people most likely to vote are the middle class, the educated and the priviliged. Many of the poor and less-educated people stay home. They believe their votes don´t count anyway – those powerful “up there” do what they want, no matter what.
When there is a low voter turnout the candidates with their power-base among the middle classes and above will have an advantage. If, however, the voter turn-out is high, this would suggest also a high turn-out of the lower classes. A candidate with a power-base among those classes would be favored by this.
Ahmadinejad´s base is mainly rural poor and religious or urban poor and religious. The majority of Iranians are still religious and rural or urban poor. Under these conditions a Mousavi victory would have been highly unlikely.
The reaction of the mainline media and their support for Mousavi´s claim is not at all surprising, it´s a blatant and unconcealed effort to once again destabilize Iran, encouraging violent uprisings, not so different from what happened in the past to a certain Mohammed Mosaddeq and of course in line with the CIA sponsering of terrorist groups who have been very active in the last weeks before the elections.
The motives of the alternatives are another matter, they are more moved by emotionally ingrained ideology, plain old Islamophobia.
For Christians the motives of Islamophobia might be an- often even unacknowledged- but historically founded religious intolerance and superiority complex. (b.t.w. I´m a Christian myself, I can see the attitude, and I don´t like it).
For left-wing Progressives and Libertarians the reasons lie in a general hostility towards religion and an unreflected loyalty to modern day feminism.
Marx has called religion “Opium for the people” and his followers especially in the Soviet Union and China thought they needed to fight a special “anti-drug war” causing literally millions of deaths. Fighting religion was one of their ways of creating the “New Communist Man”, a reeducation program which they promised would lead from a state-controlled authoritarian socialism to a no-state libertarian communism. It didn´t work.
Modern day Progressives are less doctrinal and a bit more tolerant, as is shown by occasional alliances with left-wing Catholic groups in South America. They reserve their anti-religious hostility mainly for Islam. Feminism is the driving factor in this now, and there they join hands with left- and right-wing libertarians.
While Marx believed that women´s rights would automatically improve together with the rights of the working classes, modern-day lefties allied with liberal feminists have now adopted the doctrine, that the struggle for women´s rights and against a patriarchal system must be fought independently from the struggle for social justice, but is still a vital part of the left´s ideology.
This doctrinal take on the matter of women´s rights makes for enormous contradictions in the attitude of the western Left to the Islamic world. We now have western left-wing Progressives supporting neoliberal often ultra-rich politicians, – whose wives, daughters and other female relatives are the back-bone of the women´s liberation movement – in the Middle East, while denouncing the more social justice minded as reactionary hard-liners. (Third world lefties do not have this kind of problem with Islam, as the attitude of the Venezuelan Hugo Chavez and the Bolivian Evo Morales towards Mahmoud Ahmadinejad show quite plainly.)
In my opinion the Left should at least consider to get their priorities straight. For in this case Marx was indeed right, women who are struggling for their everyday survival together with their man-folk just don´t have the strength and power to struggle for equal rights against them. Social justice or the rise to at least moderate economic security must come first, women´s rights will follow. We can see the same pattern in environmentalism. Only in countries where the majority enjoys middle class economic security, there are large grass-root movements calling for the protection of forests or wild-life. Poor people just don´t have the time or mind to care for environmental matters unless it directly endangers their survival as in the pollution of their agricultural lands, the poisoning of their breathing air or drinking water.
As for Libertarians the opposition to a theocratic minded Islam is quite natural. Secularism or at least a strict division between church and state is part of libertarian culture. However while this concept is an integral part of our western culture and our democratic history, for the people of the Middle East it looks quite differently. For them western secular culture has so far only come with the additional baggage of western financial imperialism, a take-over of land and resources often with the additional help of military operation or covert war-fare by destabilization efforts. In the eyes of many Middle-Easterners the interests of the majority population to live independently and in dignity, allowing them to profit from their own´s countries resources can only be achieved or protected by political Islam.
In my opinion the people of developing countries should have the right to make their own choices in line with their own culture and history, develop their own way towards economic and social progress without self-righteous western interference. And do I have to remind you that on the democracy and human right level we in the West haven´t been doing so well lately either.
And as a P.S. on the situation of women´s rights in Iran: the admittance of female students at Iranian universities lies by about 60% (meaning only 40% males). This is surely higher than anywhere in the Middle East and possibly anywhere in the world. Female literacy rate of young women in Iran has risen to near 100% after the islamic revolution and Iranian female scientiests and inventors have received many international prices.
Well educated and economically independent women have ever increasing opportunities to achieve more equal rights by their own power. They do not need western money and interference. Indeed western support for Iranian feminism is counter-productive since it makes their organisations look like western imperial stooges.
Libertarians are not against religion and are not pro-feminist; you are confusing liberals and libertarians, which is a grave error as they couldn’t be farther apart with regard to beliefs.
Liberals like lots of government and libertarians dislike lots of government.
Must be a big page!
When ever there are elections existing goverments say always it is fair. Oppositions say it is fair when they win – but seldom otherwise.
Unlike Bush’s US or Calderon’s Mexico, Iran problably does not need to manipulate the votes – Iran instead manipulates who can stand. Every candidate who stands is thus a ‘good’ candidate for those in power – though one may be more ‘good’ than another.
Though one death is always one too many, fatalities in say an Indian or Nigerian election are accepted, whereas one death in Iran is taken as proof of an election being rigged.
As myself a libertarian, I must say nay to your mention of people of my thinking. Raimondo and anti-war I no longer read after the comments he made pro Obama. One apple does not make a cider. Left and neocons, have at them ,as they are useless milling knaves. Libertarians are a different story entirely as the free of us want freedom for everyone.
Personally? I think Islam is harsh in Iran. Hanging students
for speaking out against whatever and some laws against women I do not support. Iran is far more liberal in many women’s issues than the US however and Iran is not warring on lies as the US is. Neither peoples have ever experienced pro-libertarian policies, and as Bush and Obama were both leftists and caused damage to central Asia, maybe we both should.
[...] Notsilvia Night Things have changed since yesterday and I have to partly revise my opinion from then. Now all over the blogoshere voices start to emerge who smell a rat about what is happening in Iran [...]
Snarpinchitown:
You might be right, maybe I do confuse liberals and libertarians sometimes. However, among libertarians there are those who think let´s say a bit negative about religion. As for governments I have come to the conclusion lately that libertarians are most often right in their suspicion of governments.

You are right Iran isn´t a model of democracy and often harsh to the opposition. However they do no longer hang anybody for their opinion. Nowadays they only hang people for murder, rape and smuggling of large amounts of drugs (drug king-pins).
Gay people are left alone if they don´t go public. The Iranian police does not invade the privacy of Iranian homes for sexual behavior of the people inside, except maybe in small ultra-conservative rural communities. The implementation of Sharia law is also more strictly enforced by rural judges than by Tehran judges.
The two “gay” men who were hanged last year, were hanged not for being gay, but for abducting a 13 year old boy at knife-point and raping him. The Iranian press reported this, not the western.

True the Iranian government decides who is allowed to run in the elections. And the western corporate or government owned media decides who is going to get a chance in western elections.
Or would you think that Ron Paul was given a fair deal by the mainline media last year?

This is by far one of the best, most well-informed articles written about the current anti-Islam global scenario, accurately reflecting the situation, & I congratulate u for it. U have penned the exact same thoughts & arrived at the exact same conclusions that I have been having for years (although I am too lazy & not skilled enough to write, let alone start a blog). I stumbled upon ur amazing blog just by chance & was really impressed.
Like you I have long come to the conclusion that it is all about the money & power. The various western political-socio-economic movements, whether right-wing, left-wing, liberal, conservative, socialist etc are all subservient to the military-industrial-financial complex, whose globalist vision is the driving force of current western culture & philosophy. Hence they r on a collision course with the Islamic world. This is indeed a Clash of Civilizations.
But why Islam. Islamic ideology at its very core is antagonistic to everything that Western Big Business stands for. For example, Islam prohibits Usury, which forms the basis of western economic philosophy, & is the foundation on the basis of which the elite globalist bankers have established their control on the global monetary & currency system, thus enslaving the world population in never ending debt. This the very reason why Islam strictly requires that all financial transaction be based on Gold & Silver (Dinar & Dirham). Indeed that would be the case in a truly Islamic state based on Sharia & Islamic principles, but the West & global elite cant have that, as it undermines their credit monopoly.
There are numerous other reasons for the antagonism of the west to the Muslim world, & u have touched on many of them, including western self perceived superiority & racism. However I believe the major driving force is still the corrupt economic philosophy of the banking elites & their allies, which is based on greed, exploitation & Consumerism. Indeed western economic philosophy & culture is based on the premise that anything & everything is worthy of exploit & should make a profit. Whether it be the environment, natural resources, animals, even people, especially women. You hit the nail on the head when you mention the view of Muslims on Feminism & Liberalism (I wonder why more westerners do not understand that the way you have). The Islamic view on Womens’ rights is at odds with that of the corrupt, Godless Feminist philosophy. Muslims believe that women have the right to honor, dignity & chastity, the right of freedom from exploitation, the right to be supported by her husband, the right to bear children & nurture them & above all the right to a stable family. The abuse of women in Muslim lands (if at all) is more often the by-product of local cultural & traditional ideologies that are wrongfully attributed to Islam.
One must remember that colonialism never ended in the 20th century. It only became more sophisticated & subtle. Exploitation, oppression & injustice still continue & have become even more pervasive. Yet most people do not recognize it & are content in their economic slavery as happy consumers. And that is what the global elite want…’Happy Workers & Happy Consumers’ who dont question but simply graze like sheep – work for debt-ridden worthless paper currency & consume more products than they need, thereby ever increasing their debt. In the Islamic economic philosophy there is no place for mindless consumerism & the economic exploitation that goes along with it. And that, among many other reasons is why the global elite/west are at war with Islam, using their abundant resources, power & influence to fight Islam on all fronts…..economically, politically, via the media & even actual Wars (lets not forget War in itself is the most profitable business venture).
All in all a great blog. I admire your honesty & Im happy that there are at least a few westerners with the sense to understand whats going on around them. I look forward to more informative articles from you.
